IRTG: Research Training Day | Atmosphere-Vegetation-Soil Interaction: Evapotranspiration feedbacks by Jordi Vilà-Guerau de Arellano

  The aim of the course is to study the main interactions between the atmospheric boundary layer and the surface, characterized by different vegetation and soil conditions. First, we learn, through systematic numerical experiments, the responses of the diurnal evaporation to the evolution of surface and boundary-layer dynamics properties. We represent and discuss these responses using a feedback diagram that includes the main interactions that drive evaporation. Second, we study how these effects lead to changes in boundary layer dynamics such as the growth of the atmospheric boundary layer and the formation of clouds.

The course format is based on short introductory theoretical lectures, follow up with practical exercises based on numerical experiments. In doing so, we  learn the sensitivity of the atmosphere-vegetation-soil system to atmosphere and surface initial and boundary conditions. These practical sessions will end up with an open discussion among the participants. The course will finalize with a workshop in which the attendants will present their main findings based on the results obtained numerical experiments. The course requires basic knowledge of meteorology and hydrology.
