The validation of new models, model components, and pattern algorithms within the TR32 requires high-quality measurement data with high temporal and/or spatial resolution, such as eddy covariance (EC) flux data or spatially distributed atmospheric, soil and hydrological data.
Within TR32 these data are mainly obtained in a monitoring mode, leading to huge raw datasets requiring continuous and standardized processing and quality control. Provision of high quality data also requires specific attention to calibration, and maintenance of equipment and consistent analysis of higher level products. Therefore, Z3 provides technical support for the instruments including station setup, regular maintenance, and calibration, as well as data quality control and processing. Advantages of such a central project section are standardized data acquisition and post processing procedures. Currently, Z3 operates 7 eddy covariance stations, 10 cosmic ray stations, 6 research weather stations distributed across the Rur catchment. Additionally, two soil moisture sensor networks installed at the Wüstebach and Rollesbroich site are in operation. Finally, a central calibration laboratory was established which can be also used by any other TR32 member for individual system calibration (e.g. of closed chamber systems for CO2 efflux measurements). Along these technical supports Z3 coordinates the contacts to local farmers, experimental setups within the field sites and provides detailed information about the management practice of the various field and locations.
